The National Food and Nutrition Security Plan (2018-2023) describes how South Africa will combat the silent crisis of malnutrition. It also identifies the school nutrition programme as a key intervention for combating short term hunger amongst children.

Description:

The document sets out South African efforts to reverse the malnutrition growth in the next 15 years. For FULL purposes, the National Food and Nutrition Security Plan highlights are the following:

  • it defines “food” as:
    • “Any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the human body. It is usually
      of animal or plant origin and contains essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins,
      vitamins and minerals”.
  • it indentifies the National School Nutrition Programme as “an important vehicle for ensuring that millions of vulnerable children have access to nutritious meals”.
