Resolution on the Consumption of Salt or Sodium (Resolution No. 23/2013)

Summary:

This resolution regulates the content of iodine allowed in salt intended for human consumption.

Description:

This resolution intendeds to eradicate the harmful health effects caused by deficiency or excess iodine.

In this sense, the resolution defines:

  • Salt for human consumption as a “crystalized sodium chloride”. It is extracted from natural sources, and mandatorily enriched with iodine. (Article 3, I)
  • Iodization: the process of adding the micronutrient iodine to salt in the form of potassium iodate. (Article 3, II)

The regulation also established the maximum and minimum iodine content limits (Article 4). At last, the resolution recommends that processed food do not use non-iodized salt as an ingredient (Article 6), due to its interference in the organoleptic characteristics of the product.

The resolution is hereby repealed under Resolution 604 of 2022.
