Food and Drugs Regulations

Summary:

This law provides for the regulation of food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices.

Description:

The Regulations provide definitions for terms such as “artificial (non-nutritive) sweetening agent” and “food addictive” (section 7).

In addition, advertising any food unless the advertisement complies with the Food and Drug Act and these Regulations is prohibited (section 3(1)). The Regulations also provide specific requirements for labels on foods (sections 5(1) and 11- 28). For instance, they regulate statements or claims relating to carbohydrate or sugar reduced diets (section 24), calorie reduced diets (section 25)  and sodium content (section 26).
